After the sudden death of their mother, teenage twins Rachel and Theo Matheson travel to Auckland to stay with relatives on the shore of Lake Pupuke. Where there was once a strong, psychic bond between them, they are now disconnected as Theo struggles to confront his grief - yet for reasons they can't explain, both of them are drawn to the volcanic lake and in particular to the sinister Wilberforce house around the shore.

While on a tour of the city with their cousin Ricky, Theo encounters Mr Jones, a strange old man in whose hands fire seems to glow. Spurred on by a sense that the Wilberforces are watching them Theo decides to investigate the house, oblivious to the growing threat to his sister.

With their lives in danger and only the mysterious Mr Jones to guide them, Rachel and Theo must rekindle the unique powers they once shared in order to destroy the ancient evil they have uncovered, before it destroys them.
